The Purposes

There are 3 purposes of Public Speaking :

- Influence or invite listeners to participate in implementing or doing what the public speaker says

- inform or tell something regarding the topic

- entertain and educate listeners

Aspect/part

1. Communicator or speaker

Speakers must do a lot of preparation and practice. They know there is no easy way to be a great speaker.

2. Listener

If you are presenting something and you are not familiar with it, or even tired of repeating it, your listeners will be skeptical, uninterested, disengaged and bored.

3. Message to be conveyed for listeners

Just say what you feel like saying. Keep it simple and clear. Over time you can modulate the quality of conversation to different audiences.

4. Equipment / facilities used

If you don’t like being around you or even uncomfortable with the facilities that you found in that place, so will people. Do things that make you happy, so that people can’t help but join.

5. Feedback from listeners

Maintaining eye contact must be prioritized in getting good feedback from listeners so that they feel noticed and stay focused on the speech delivered by the speaker.

6. Anticipating all obstacles

Anticipating all obstacles that we found in listener divided into two categories (internal and external)

The Differences between Regular Conversation and Public Speaking

1. Placement: Regular conversation is taking place in a setting which occurs normally, on an everyday basis.

While public speaking differs from :

2. Specific topic: most of the time, a conversation drifts, whereas in public speaking, people are in those seats or are standing to hear you speak for something specific, so you need to deliver on that expectation.

3. Mechanics of speaking: standing up straight/good posture, projecting your voice, speaking and enunciating clearly are particularly important. In some cultures, remaining at the podium/lectern is considered good form; in others, moving around a bit is preferred—know which is best for your crowd.

4. Material: you will likely have accompanying slides or other visuals to accompany your speech. The technology allowing this needs to be flawless and is worth checking multiple times prior to the actual speech.

5. Message Delivery: Public speaking is more like - you prepare well what you wish to say, slides, papers, presentations - etc. - you even choose people to listen to what you wish to say and they correct you, complement you or give you more input.

When you speak with someone daily - that is more formal - i.e. easier - you do not need to prepare sheets or a powerpoint presentation - you are not on a whiteboard or on a blackboard - you just speak from your heart,.
